After Hydroseeding Lawn Care Guide
Small sprouts. Big potential.
Congratulations on your new lawn!
Hydroseeding is a cost-effective and efficient way to establish grass. However, it is important to remember that hydroseed is not a finished lawn. It is an application of seed that requires proper care during germination and early growth.
With consistent watering and attention during the first few weeks, your lawn will establish successfully.
What to Expect After Hydroseeding
Note: Growth after three weeks can often look patchy
Growth Timeline
- Initial sprouting typically appears within 7 to 21 days.
- Growth may look uneven or patchy in early stages.
- Fuller coverage develops around 4 to 5 weeks.
- After the third mowing, your lawn is generally considered mature.
Patchiness in the first few weeks is normal. Do not panic. Continue proper watering. An application of fertilizer will help it fill in and establish. Apply fertilizer when the new grass is about 3/4″ in length (usually around three weeks).
Pro Tip: Squeeze some mulch between your fingers or press a finger 1” into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.
The Most Important Rule: Keep It Moist
For the first 2 to 3 weeks, the mulch layer must remain consistently moist.
Not soaked, not flooded, but never dry.
This often means watering several times per day for 10 to 20 minutes per cycle, depending on weather conditions.
Dry mulch results in failure. Moist mulch results in growth.
As the property owner, watering during germination is your responsibility.
Remember: Dry = Dead Moist = Growth.
Fertilize at 3 to 4 Weeks
Fertilization is crucial for strong establishment.
Apply a balanced granular fertilizer, such as 18-18-18, approximately 3 to 4 weeks after hydroseeding or once the grass reaches about three quarters of an inch tall.
This step supports continued root development and density.
Minimize Foot Traffic
Avoid walking on the area for at least 3 to 4 weeks.
Keep pets and children off the lawn during early establishment. Foot traffic can disturb developing seedlings and create uneven growth.
First Mow
Wait until the grass reaches approximately 3 inches in height before mowing.
When mowing:
- Use sharp blades.
- Avoid cutting shorter than 2 inches.
- Do not mow when the soil is overly wet.
Cutting too short or using dull blades can damage young grass.
After three mows, your lawn is considered mature.
Common Questions
Why does my lawn look patchy?
Early growth often appears uneven. Different grass varieties germinate at different rates. Continue watering consistently and allow the lawn to fill in. An application of fertilizer will help it fill in and establish. Apply fertilizer when the new grass is about 3/4″ in length (usually around three weeks).
What happens if the mulch dries out?
If the mulch dries completely during germination, seed is likely to fail to establish. Prompt and consistent watering is critical during the first few weeks. Remember: Dry = Dead Moist = Growth.
