How Does Hydroseeding Work?
A Practical Overview
Hydroseeding works by spraying a blended mixture of seed, fertilizer, mulch, and water directly onto prepared soil in a single pass. The mulch holds moisture against the seed during germination, which is what makes it more reliable than hand seeding on larger areas and slopes.
Sprouting typically begins within 7 to 21 days.
A mature lawn is established after three mowings.

Step by Step Process
1. Site Preparation
Proper preparation is critical. The area should be:
- Graded correctly
- Cleared of debris
- Finished with suitable topsoil*
- Ready for irrigation
Hydroseeding does not replace proper soil preparation.
*As a general rule, a minimum of four inches of quality topsoil gives grass roots enough depth to establish.
2. Mixture & Calibration
Seed blends are selected based on:
- Residential or commercial use
- Sun and shade exposure
- Soil conditions
- Specification requirements
The mixture is calibrated to ensure correct seed application rates per square foot / square meter.
3. Application
- Uniform coverage
- Consistent seed-to-mulch ratio
- Efficient application over large areas
4. Germination & Establishment
With proper watering:
- Sprouting typically begins within 7–21 days
- Growth may appear patchy early (an application of fertilizer will help it fill in and establish)
- Density improves over several weeks
- Lawn is considered mature after three mowings
Hydroseeding is not instant like sod. It requires consistent moisture during germination.
Is Hydroseeding Right for My Project?
Minimum Area:
Hydroseeding is most economical for areas of 1,000 square feet or more. For smaller patches, hand seeding is usually the better call
Best time of year on Vancouver Island:
Spring and fall are the practical windows. Summer hydroseeding is possible but summer watering restrictions make consistent germination moisture difficult to maintain for most homeowners. Fall applications benefit from cooling temperatures and natural rainfall. Spring works well if irrigation is available.
Soil preparation
Hydroseeding does not fix a bad base. The area needs to be graded, cleared of debris, and finished with suitable topsoil before application. If your soil is heavily compacted, weedy, rocky, or poorly draining, those problems need to be addressed first or the seed will not establish regardless of how it is applied.
